  1. Choosing The Perfect Location For Your Engagement Session

Some may say the location of your engagement session doesn’t matter, but I’m here to tell you that it’s incredibly important. You should be choosing a location that fits the vibe of the you as a couple. If you aren’t formal, then don’t go formal. If you aren’t an outdoorsy person, don’t choose to have an outdoor engagement session. I like to ask my couples what they would be doing together on their ideal weekend. If you love taking romantic walks in the park, then lets go to the park. If you and your partner love to get drinks at your favorite brewery, lets go there. The options are truly endless for your engagement session and you can truly curate the look and feel you want by centering it around you and your partner.

2. Choose Your Ideal Activity at Your Chosen Location

Think of what activities make sense at the location you’ve decided on. For example, if you’re in the park, then bring a packed picnic with your favorite lunch, bring a cozy blanket, and even a delicious charcuterie board. Maybe renting a row boat for some romantic photos on the water. When you think of activities that people would normally do at the location of your choosing, it tells the story.

3. Bring Some Props That Make Sense & Are Things You Enjoy

Layer in props that makes sense to the location and activities that you’re doing, even better if they’re things that you really enjoy doing together. Do you both love to order in pizza? Let’s order some pizza and take photos of you enjoying a couple of slices together downtown. Maybe you both love champagne. Bring a bottle and lets pop it for some fun photos. Love laying in the grass on a cozy blanket? Bring it and let’s capture you both doing the things you love to do together. Or maybe you both are avid readers. Bring your favorite books! The possibilities for props are endless in creating a unique engagement session that tells your love story. Props also give you hand something to do, making it a little less awkward for you in front of the camera.

4. Choose Outfits That Make Sense For You, The Location, and The Activity.

Choosing outfits that compliment each other is also incredibly important in styling your engagement session. We don’t want you both looking like you’re dressed for completely different occasions or a repeat of the infamous Hailey and Justin Bieber mismatched outfits, am I right? Choose neutral outfits that blend well with the environment that you’re in. It’s best to coordinate and choose colors in the same color family that are complimentary to each other, but don’t overly match your partner either. Don’t wear big patterns and don’t do things like wear heels to the park. I always recommend couples wear outfits with movement as they photograph better than tight outfits. Most importantly, be comfortable and be yourself. Don’t put yourself in an activity, location, or an outfit that you wouldn’t normally wear for the sake of looking good for your engagement session. It will show through your photos that you’re not being true to yourself, and we don’t want that.
